Knocked out permanent tooth
Recover the tooth, making sure to hold it by the crown (top) and not the root end. Reinsert the tooth in the socket if no fractures are noted and hold it in place using a clean piece of gauze or cloth. If the tooth cannot be reinserted, carry it in a cup containing milk or water. Because time is essential, see a dentist immediately.
Toothache
Begin by cleaning around the sore tooth meticulously. Using warm salt water, rinse the mouth to displace any food trapped between teeth. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you use aspirin on the aching tooth or on the gum. In the event of facial swelling, apply a cold compress to the area. For temporary pain relief, acetaminophen is recommended. Please call our office immediately to schedule an appointment with the doctor.
Cut or bitten tongue, lip or cheek
Ice can be applied to any bruised area. For bleeding apply firm (but gentle) pressure with sterile gauze or a clean cloth. If bleeding does not stop after 15 minutes, take the child to the emergency room.
Bleeding after loss of a baby tooth
Fold a piece of gauze and place it directly over the extraction site. Have your child bite down and hold the gauze for 15 minutes. If bleeding still persists, contact our office.
Possible broken jaw
In the event of jaw injury, tie the mouth closed with a towel, tie or scarf. Go to an emergency room immediately.
Cold or canker sores
Canker sores (Aphthous Ulcer) are small sores inside the mouth that often recur. Generally lasting 10 to 14 days, the duration of these sores can be reduced by topical agents. If discomfort persists, contact our office for in-office medicinal application or laser treatment.
Tooth Discoloration
Certain foods and drinks can stain teeth as well as some medications, tobacco use or poor oral hygiene. Dental trauma can also change the tooth color. If you notice discoloration on your child’s teeth, please contact our office to determine the cause and to take the necessary measures.
